Pondering how to live well

Je trouve qu'il n'est rien de plus sain pour l'esprit que quelques mois de campagne: pour l'esprit et pour le caractère. Dans cette demi-solitude, on se guérit à peu près de toutes les petites préoccupations d'amour-propre, on n'a plus personne avec qui lutter; on songe à bien vivre, à bien penser, à bien agir pour son compte, sans vouloir faire mieux que les autres; on vit d'une manière à la fois plus personnelle et plus désintéressée. On a pour soi, pour ses rêves, pour ses espérances, pour ses ambitions, toute l'étendue de l'horizon et toute la hauteur du ciel.

I think that there is nothing healthier for the mind than several months in the countryside: for the mind and for the character. In that half-solitude, one heals oneself of just about every little vain preoccupation, one has no one left to fight; one ponders how to live well, to think well, to act well for oneself, without wanting to do better than others; one lives in a way that is at once more personal and more disinterested. One has for oneself, for one's dreams, for one's hopes, for one's ambitions, the full scope of the horizon and the full height of the sky.
